Overview

Description

A blue-and-white jug catches the light beside a lute resting on its rounded back. A loose ribbon falls across the ledge, softening the straight lines of the shelves and dark panels behind it. The cool blues of the jug and the warm browns of the instrument give this quiet still life its character.

The title, Homenaje a Vermeer — Homage to Vermeer — tells us where Manzur is looking for inspiration. Music, stillness and light recall the Dutch painter, while the angled planes and divided space give the composition a distinctly modern feel. Charcoal creates the deep shadows, and pastel brings colour and softness to the objects. Up close, fine marks and gentle shading give the jug and lute their sense of volume.
